Rehabilitation for drug and substance abuse is the processes of psychotherapeutic and medical treatment for dependency on substances such as prescription drugs, alcohol, heroin, cocaine, or amphetamines. The main focus of drug rehabilitation is to help a person to their substance abuse and avoid physical, social, financial, legal psychological consequences of these actions.

The area of psychological dependency is dealt with in many programs for drug rehabilitation in order to help teach a patient a new way of living in an environment free of drugs. In these programs, patients are usually some time required or encouraged to avoid any contact with individuals that are still abusing addictive substances. In a 12-step program, patients are encouraged to change and examine the habits that surround their additions as opposed to stop using drugs.

There are various types of substance rehabilitation programs such as sober and recovery houses, gender and age specific programs, local support groups, out-patient programs, and residential treatment programs.

Counseling is also a very effective method used to identify problems and behaviors associated with addiction. This method is common for group settings but can be done on an individual basis. Counseling for substance addiction can include daily counseling, weekly counseling, and drop-in counseling support. Through counseling for substance abuse, individuals are taught coping strategies and how to reestablish healthy behavior when they find themselves in at risk. There are counseling programs that also involve family members because oftentimes they are the most affected when a love one suffers from an addiction.

Finding Help

You are not your addiction. It’s the first thing that addicts need to know if there is any hope of them getting better. These days addicts face an extraordinary challenge where they are asked to do amazing things. Kicking the drug habit that has plagued them forever is far easier said then done, and then to never go back to that place seems rather impossible, but the truth is that it is possible. It’s quite possible to have the kind of life you should be living even with a past that is checkered with drugs and alcohol.

If you are sick with the condition of addiction then you have to know that your help is out there and it comes in various ways. While in most cases the best option is to go to a treatment center for a period of one to two weeks at least, it’s not always feesible or cost efficient. Insurance does play a role in the amount of money you can spend on your treatment. While you should feel assured that you are going to get treatment through your insurance, it’s important to give them a call to find out just how much treatment you are allowed to receive. This will not only tell you if and when you can get treatment, but it will also tell you how much money you might need to contribute to your own sobriety.

One you have found out just how much you can afford to pay you can start looking around at the various facilities. These facilities are going to be pretty similar. What you are looking for is the overall atmosphere and the living situation you will have. It’s not ever going to be plush or real accommodating, but at the very least you should be able to find something that is worth while. You can get help and it will be wonderful and fulfilling. It’s the best choice you can make.

Recovery From Drug Addiction

Getting into the habit of drug addiction is very easy and one can become a drug addict within a matter of few days, but getting out of it and coming out a normal person is a tough job and yet times becomes impossible. There are several instances where a drug addict gets fully cured only to go into a relapse after a short period of time.

Firstly, when a patient is diagnosed with a confirmed case of drug addiction, the most important and urgent thing to do is to take him to a rehab center for treatment. There are many such rehab centers around your neighborhood and you should be careful about choosing the right rehab center. Always try and go to rehab centers which have been around for at least 5 years because these are the ones who have the requisite experience and expertise in dealing with drug addiction cases thoroughly and professionally. Before admitting the patient, discuss with him that he has a problem and that he needs to undergo treatment in a rehab center for complete cure. Do not brush the fact under the carpet because treatment in a rehab center or even in the house cannot be done without the full cooperation of the patient. One more piece of advice, it is always better to have the patient treated as an inpatient rehab patient rather than an outpatient because of some obvious benefits and advantages.

Another important fact that should be kept in mind in the recovery process is that once the patient is detoxified, the reason for drug addiction identified and the patient has been completely cured, he should be prevented from going into a relapse. Here the family plays a very vital role and the near and dear of the patient should treat him with compassion, love and care and should aid in rebuilding his life once again.

Reasons For Drug Addiction

If you ask any drug addict as to why he or she has fallen a victim to drug addiction you are sure to come out with a host of reasons. So accumulating all the reasons and putting it in one capsule titled “drug addiction reasons” would be difficult because the reasons could be so many so varied. However, going by experience and looking into the various drug addiction cases that have been treated in many drug rehab centers, the following could be the major reasons for drug addiction or substance abuse.

The most common reason could be a family history of drug addiction. If you look at it from a slightly different angle you will find that in many families if either the father or mother is a smoker or is a tobacco chewer, chances are that he or she may pass on this addiction to his children. The same applies to drug addiction too. Many drug addiction victims are so because of their family tradition. So if this scourge has to end a beginning has to be made in the home, as the proverb amply states that “charity begins at home”.

Some drug addictions happen because many patients who suffer from very painful or even terminal diseases resort to drugs to camouflage and hide pain. This is really a very serious and pathetic condition which calls for immediate medical intervention. If the pain is remedied and taken care of, many such patients would give up this habit.

The next main reason for substance abuse could be peer pressure. This is especially true with teenager and college students. They could be a victim because they have fallen in bad company and have been forced into this habit which they are able to do away with. Here too the parents have a big role to play and they should keep a tab of their wards’ activities and movements to avoid such a situation.

Shifting Drug Trends Worldwide

Each year, the World Drug Report shares information about current trends that are seen in the use of drugs worldwide. For 2010, it looks like there are some shifts in what drugs are being abused and who is doing the abusing.

In Europe, abuse of cocaine has risen, doubling in the last decade to 4.1 million users (as of 2008). Coca, which is mostly grown in Andean countries of South America, is now flowing to Europe through West Africa, which has caused an increase of drug users in West Africa to choose cocaine as well. This shift illustrates a new trend in drug abuse; where many of the drug users used to be mostly in developed nations, now more and more users are in developing nations, such as West Africa. In these countries, there are no drug treatment facilities to help these addicts overcome their addictions. This spells major trouble for these countries because it’s possible that these addicts will never overcome their problem, which is very treatable with the right programs.

According to the World Drug Report of 2010, in the United States, the trend has been moving away from cocaine and towards prescription drugs and amphetamine-type stimulants. There are an estimated 30 or 40 million users of amphetamine-like drugs in the United States, which are produced within the country. One reason for the popularity is the ingredients are readily available.

The Obama administration is working on strategies to reduce drug abuse problems for its citizens. One way in which they hope to do this is through integrating drug treatment programs into the health care system and making coverage for drug treatment facilities a part of typical health plans. Making drug abuse programs covered should help drug users to get help, whether they’re getting help in drug rehab California programs or help in other states. Unfortunately, with the trends of drug abuse spreading to developing nations, many addicts will be without help in countries around the world.
