When people become dependent on psychoactive substances like alcohol, opium or other prescription drugs, drug rehabilitation becomes necessary. Abuse of drugs generally affects the functioning of the central nervous system, thereby altering the behavior of the abusers. Their craving for drugs becomes so uncontrollable and overwhelming that they come to a stage of addiction.
It is a medical therapeutic process to deal with or eliminate the abuse of drugs in a person. There are different types of treatments available for drug rehabilitation depending on the nature of abuse, abusive substance and the factor that influenced the drug abuse. There are treatment programs like residential treatment, support groups, extended care, and recovery houses. However, most of the programs involve a combination of medication and behavioral therapy to rehabilitate the drug addicts.
Detoxification
The addictive substances in the body can remain in the drug addicts even after the withdrawal of the substance. Due to their presence the rehabilitated addicts can develop cravings for the drug once again. A combination of sauna, nutritional food and exercises, these toxins are removed from the bloodstream completely. Even the substances deposited in the fatty acids are removed away through such drugs detoxification programs. Thus the cravings for the substance get eliminated from the rehabilitated person.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
It is one of the various treatments provided to the drug addicts to deal with drug addiction. Various psychological techniques are employed in this therapy. Here the attitude of the person to blame outside world for his present situation is altered in a slow yet steady process by inculcating positive thoughts in them. Individual case analysis is first performed to arrive at the factors that influenced the person to become an addict. Then counseling is done to bring in significant change in the way they look at the world. Here the addicts are helped to find the distortions and the methods to rectify or overcome them.
